Week 47 - Helaman 5:12

Hi Friends!

So on Saturday we had an appointment with Wong, and we'd planned to meet on campus. It was drizzling as we got our bikes out, so we said a prayer right before we left that it wouldn't rain on us. Well.. we got outside, and the second we started riding the heavens opened and DUMPED on us. Like raining so hard it kind of hurt, haha. I started laughing, because what else do you do.. I think I was half laughing half crying, but you couldn't really tell because nothing could be heard over the sound of rain pelting my helmet. Peddling as fast and hard as we could, we were about 3 minutes into our 10 minute bike ride when suddenly Wong's car pulls up next to us out of no where, and he starts shouting for us to get in. We had to explain that we couldn't get in his car because of the mission rules, blah blah. He felt so bad for us. We decided not to ride all the way to campus, and Wong stood
outside his car in the rain with us until we could figure out where else to go. We felt so bad, but he refused to get in because we were "doing this for him!" We decided to head to this restaurant called Ichiban's, with Wong following us slowly in his car the whole way, just to discover that they'd closed. We ran into the restaurant next door to find shelter, but they told us they were closing too. So back out into the rain we went, when from across the street shown a big beautiful warm inviting neon sign: PIZZA HUT. We ran across the flooded street, parked our bikes, and sloshed into Pizza Hut, looking like we just survived Katrina.

ANYWAY..
We had one of the best lessons we've ever had, and the best part? Wong told us he wants to be baptized! So amazing!! Woah, it was such a sweet experience. Sometimes that's how it goes in life. Things get crazy, dark, cold and scary.. But when we persevere, stay strong, and keep moving through the tears. That's when the miracles happen. Where the growth takes place, where the light breaks through, and the joy of overcoming completely erases all traces of sorrow.

Helaman 5:12
And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer,
who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when
the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

In other news, we found a dead mouse in our apartment, and made the Elders come remove it for us.

It was free Chil Fil A day (if you dress up like a cow they'll give you free food) so we made them some cow spots

’Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin, But held it up with a smile:
“What am I bidden, good folks,” he cried, “Who’ll start the bidding for me?”
“A dollar, a dollar”; then, “Two!” “Only two? Two dollars, and who’ll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
Going for three—”
But no, From the room, far back, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, “What am I bid for the old violin?”
And he held it up with the bow.
“A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two?
Two thousand! And who’ll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
And going, and gone!” said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
“We do not quite understand
What changed its worth.” Swift came the reply:
“The touch of a master’s hand.”
And many a man with life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A “mess of pottage,” a glass of wine,
A game—and he travels on.
He’s “going” once, and “going” twice,
He’s “going” and almost “gone.”
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought
By the touch of the Master’s hand.

That poem at the end was shared with us by President Sainsbury in his
weekly today. I really liked it! Talking about the Atonement of Jesus
Christ 💙

Week 46 - Fireworks and Free Lemonade

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall
be filled -Matthew 5:6   "FREE LEMONADE!!"

HI!

So the 4th of July was way fun. We decided to set up a Free Lemonade and Face Painting stand down on the River Walk. It was perfect, because everyone would park and walk up the river walk to get to the fireworks and festivities in Downtown Tuscaloosa! We put Book of Mormons and pamphlets out on the table, so people would ask us questions while we painted their kids faces. It was so fun! Everyone was super friendly, and we were able to teach tons of families.

Wong is still doing great. We had another awesome lesson with him. Man, it's just so cool teaching these things to someone who's hearing them for the first time. I wish I knew how to describe it. Being able to experience how truly incredible this message is. Sometimes we get so casual and take for granted the things we know. Have you ever tried reading the scriptures like you were learning brand new principles? Try it. Read Alma 18:24-41.

I also tried this with reading my Patriarchal Blessing. Read yours as though you were giving it to someone else. The promises and blessings and beautiful things said, no matter how simple, are so powerful.

We have to go, and the computer won't load any pictures.. I'll try to get some more out next week.

I love you all,

Love Teirs

Week 45 - Biking...Tornadoes...Aloe Vera

Ok so we're in a biking area.. BTW. Yeah. Right at the beginning of summer. Did I tell you about how I put on my mission papers that I'm extremely sensitive to the sun, and don't deal well in heat? Yeah DON'T DO THAT. They think it's funny.

I'm joking.. but for real I panicked a little when I found out where I was going. BUT It's going to force me into shape, which I'm pretty stoked about. I've forgotten what it was like to be dry by now, so trying to talk to people while covered in sweat doesn't really faze me.

Ok let me tell you a little bit about this situation. Tuscaloosa is known for being the tornado valley of Alabama. (Look up the 2011 Tuscaloosa tornado on youtude... unless you're my mom or dad, then probably don't). Ever since the Red Bay experience, every time we have a tornado warning I
start packing my things immediately, and don't unpack for* DAYS.* I'm serious.

There's a reason my family calls me McGruff!!!

So the first day here, we were on foot headed to an appointment close to campus when a crazy downpour hit. We were *soaked through* by the time we got to Dunkin' Donuts for the apt, and stayed that way through the lesson, and dinner with the Sally's (branch President and wife) after. Seriously left puddles everywhere we sat. So ridiculous haha.

Oh and the white mist in the air?? That's just the humidity. It's literally so thick it's visible. My camera lens fogs up the second I take it out. Our first day on bikes I got FRIED of course.

Going to need more Aloe Vera!!!

I can't tell you how much I love Tuscaloosa, and the YSA! I feel extremely blessed to be serving in this area. The first day we were able to have a great lesson with a girl named Elizabeth, who I really connected with. She has a lot of the same beliefs I did before I understood the Gospel.

North Port District - Tuscaloosa
Yesterday one of our investigators came to church for the first time in his life! His name is Wong, from Beijing. Growing up, he was taught that "religion wasn't necessary." And that he only needed to believe in and rely on himself. He was introduced to Christianity by him roommate, who is a less active member of our church. When missionaries went to contact this less active member, they met Wong. He asked them to teach him to pray, because he had a test coming up that he was nervous about. A few days later, the missionaries received a text from Wong that read. "The test work. Thank you, Wong. New Christian." We've begun teaching him about who God is, and why Jesus Christ is so important to us. We taught him the Plan of Salvation, and he's attended church! Church was a bit much for him, but we told him not to worry about understanding everything there right now. Just to feel the spirit, and ask as many questions as he needs to. It has been such a cool experience to teach someone who has never known Heavenly Father. Wong's desire to learn and the pure comprehension with no bias (as he's hearing these things for the first time in his life) is.. incredible. Such a sweet experience.

There are a number of other people and lessons we've taught that have  been just as sweet. I feel like a real missionary here. Like the reasons  I came and the things I have to offer will be used here.
I LOVE working with Sister Begay. She is an absolute answer to prayers.

Conner is the coolest guy I've ever met! - Doctor Who?!

Ok.. There's no way you can get the full effect of this guy without meeting
him, But Conner is the coolest guy I've ever met. I've never met anyone
with a character life his! Haha.. I've never watched Doctor Who, but I'd
imagine Conner is a bit like Doctor Who. Extremely smart and logical. He's
got an old soul, and can usually be found with a bow tie on and a
hook-ended umbrella in hand. He's only 23, and about to start his PhD.

*He was also just baptized a couple weeks go!It's been really fun to be on campus so much. We meet there for lessons a lot, and play sports out on the quad every Friday night with YSA's and investigators. It's a really cool way to meet people!

My favorite part so far... We contact at the farmer's market every Saturday morning 💚💙💛 Oh it's just so dreamy. I've MISSED FEELING LIKE A HUMAN. This is a little bit more of what I expected the South to be like. Southern folk fishin' down on the River Walk.. tug boats pushing up the Black Warrior River..

"Luckiest girl in the history of girls..." Cute lover's lock down on the
river walk.. fitting really. My thoughts exactly. For now... my heart's
locked on that beautiful Alabama.

"It's a pretty good church..." - HAHAHA
Well I love you guys and hope you have an amazing week.

Xoxo

Alabama? Philippines? Sweden?? - Where am I?

Week 44 - A New Address for ME! Tuscaloosa YSA here I come!

I'm being transferred and my new address is:

900 Hargrove Road #121
Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

Last Lorna District pic. Going to miss these people! Elders Nelson (3rd from the left) and Diede (far right) go home this transfer. Everyone else stays... except me! I'm being transferred to the Tuscaloosa YSA area!!! My companion will be Sister Begay, who has been there one transfer already.
She says we spend all day every day on the University of Alabama campus..Roll Tide!

We had a tornado scare on Thursday, and had to spend the afternoon at the Hermana's apartment, because ours is on an upper floor. Some building damage a few towns away from us, but no deaths that I know of. I HATE tornados btw.

*Destroyed everything... except the vodka. Hahahahaha*
This is what weekly planning looks like. Oh.. the only mail I got this week was a Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which is really weird given that I don't have a home or a garden right now. Not sure how that found me.

Bahama Bucks, after an intense game of gator ball last p-day.

I love these amazing people I have met here:

Newly Baptized Allison!

Betty and Niki

Brother and Sister Huff (Ward mission leader...and amazing guy)

Brother Briggins!
Cheryl and Will

Sisters Evans and Ridley

The Toone Family. Brother Toone went to Davis High!!

Week 43 (cont'd from Jun 19th) - 10 Months Out Celebrated @ Fried Green Tomatoes

This is Sister Wright's favorite hat... She puts it on first thing when we
get home every night, and panics when she can't find it. Funniest thing
ever. Anyway. So last night we tried to record the vid of our song like 100
times, and finally Sister Wright's just like "dah! it's fine, they can just
think we're terrible singers.." then Sister Wright goes to get a drink, and
her pom pom went in her mug. "Well.. this is a disaster..." Haha! She was
pretty upset, but we laughed pretty good. You probably had to be there.

So I've never actually seen the movie.. but I've been to the restaurant! We celebrated my 10 month mark with some good ol' southern cookin'.

Cool Story! This happen before I got to Hoover.. but there was a fire in the field behind our church building. It destroyed everything up to the fence line (including the fence), but never crossed onto the church property... SO COOL

Little piece of New Orleans in the 💚 of Hoover. This is what I imagined
all of the South to be like... Dang Disney movies.
